Hello my name is Daniel, I am from England. Raymo introduced me to this site and kindly showed me how to register but I can't speak or read any Chinese so I will probably make some mistakes!

I am very interested in monitor lizards, most of my work at the moment is with Varanus olivaceus in the Philippines but I have also done quite a lot of work with Varanus exanthematicus and Varanus niloticus in Africa. I don't keep them, I only study them in the wild!

I am very interested in monitor lizards too.
but there is no such wonderful job in Taiwan
Do you also study Varanus ornatus too?
cuz it's very closely with Varanus niloticus

I keep a male black throat monitor about 4 years
but he suddenly turned white and lose his pattern 1 year ago
can you give me a help?

This is very interesting, do you have pictures of the lizard before? It seems to have a shedding problem but that doesn't explain why it is losing pigment. Otherwise it looks very healthy. What do you feed it? The shedding poblem might be to do with humidity (maybe a bit too low). If it is healthy I wouldn't worry. maybe it will turn entirely white. It is a very beautiful lizard. How big is it? I will ask advice from my friends and see if they have seen anything similar. This is new for me!

I have 3 black throat in the same environmental condition
but only he has the shedding problem since about 3 months ago
I feed rodent and chicken one time a week
his total length is about 160cm~170cm

I'll add more humid to him
and update the info let you know

昨天在gmail的及時通上碰到daniel，他和我暢談對於自己做研究的心得。

Daniel Bennett對於巨蜥及許多瀕臨絕種或是被漠視的物種相當重視，
今年已經41歲的他還帶著女兒到菲律賓的森林找尋葛氏巨蜥的蹤跡。
他的家庭和多數人一樣，只有他自己喜歡爬蟲，他的家人都沒有一個喜歡爬蟲的XD

訪談之間，我好奇的詢問: 你為什麼要選擇巨蜥?為何不是變色龍或是陸龜或是小型蜥蜴?

他說:這是一個好問題，我也不知道XD。


即使經濟拮据，但是他仍然靠著對於這些物種的熱誠，讓更多人了解這些不被重視的動物
，即使完全沒有英國政府的支持，仍然靠著某些動物園的基金會和賣書及衣服的利潤，
前往他想要去的國家做爬蟲的研究。

他也很關心亞洲區飼養巨蜥的狀況，他認為現在市面上的書籍仍然不夠豐富，而且缺乏
人工飼養條件的數據，雖然他和很多生物學家掌握很多野地的資訊，但是還是跟但是還是跟
人工飼養下的狀況之間有差距。

之前聽朋友說DIZZY POINT進了葛氏巨蜥，但是Daniel很擔憂牠們在人工飼養下的問題
因為特殊的植食性是否可讓這種巨蜥健全的在人工飼養下生存，是每位想養葛氏巨蜥的
飼主需突破的課題。

最後，這位英國人非常可愛，因為我英文有錯誤的地方他都會幫我挑出來，真的很感謝他。

If there are three animals together and two are ok the humidity is not the problem. I don't know if the skin shedding problems andthe loss of pattern are related. I will ask some friends who know more.

This is a young savannah monitor Varanus exanthematicus from farmland around Accra in Ghana

This is Varanus olivaceus, I have spent a long time studying it but I still don't know much about it!

a question about wild monitors:
I love traveling and always trying  to observe local reptiles, especially monitors.it's interesting that usually we found monitors near human place but not habitats like some national parks where we spent much time searching. they seem to like to live with people. from your experience in the field, is it a general behavior of wild monitors!? or it's just behavior of some specific species.
